Lately, many tragic events have occurred in the mainland, causing great sadness to the people there. For instance, Hurricane Irma and Harvey attacked Texas and Florida with massive power and many homes were destroyed; whole communities devastated by floods, winds and more! The Highlands Student Council wanted to help with the cause and focused their efforts on raising money for the Houston Independent School District with -- but how? Well, WITH AN ACTIVITY OF COURSE! Highlands Student Government hosted an event called Penny War! where students would gain points if they put coins into their Team’s bucket... but, there was a twist to this: other team members could put bills to decrease the amount of points! This brought so much excitement to the students during Lunch on Tuesday, October 3, 2017, as they howled and cheered for their team to win! In the end, Fantastic 4’s jar was jam packed with both coins and bills! But, after everything was counted it was Team Hui Mana’o with the win!!! In conclusion, the event was a smash success and we really felt like we made a difference by helping out students just like ourselves, a world away! Brandie, Student Government Treasurer
