Highlands Talent Showcase 2018

Through lots of planning, scripting, and preparation, we made something so special and unforgettable!  We made an event that both the contestants and audience will never forget... The Highlands Talent Showcase 2018 was held in our Gym on Friday March 16 and it was by far the most decorative, exciting, and loudest Talent Show ever!!!  With an amazing variety of singing and dancing, all of the talented participants performed their absolute best and it made it extremely difficult for the judges -- Ms. Faith Villanueva, Cheerleading Coach Auli’i, and Mr. Josiah -- to pick the winners out of the seven amazing acts. The winner wasn't the only person that won -- all of the contestants won by performing their tails off and doing the best they could and putting it all out there for everyone to see!!!  Give it up also to the crowd for being such a good audience, for allowing them to feel comfortable, and giving all of them much respect! Lastly, big thanks to everyone who helped run the activity and made go by safe and smooth -- stage hands to the people who help the contestants get ready to the judging assistants... Congratulations to:
1st Place -- Nathaniel
2nd Place -- Brandie
3rd Place -- The Young Veins

Highlands Open Art Contest 2018

Highlands is a breeding ground for creativity! From door decorating contests to talent shows, the students get to show off all of their creative skills throughout the entire school year! Most recently though, the students used their creativity in our inaugural Highlands Open Art Contest 2018. Students were allowed to draw whatever they wanted to, but they got an extra spirit point if it was in the theme of “Spring” or “Justice League.” Tons of the entries came in and made it really hard on our judges, our very own art teachers, Mr. Arios and Mr. Ching. I think the students are very eager to earn spirit points and express themselves ;). This was an amazing activity and I hope we get to see it again next year!  Aubrey, StuCo Historian

#Enough! National School Walkout

Today, March 14th 2018, we honored the 17 people whose lives were lost on February 14th, 2018, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.  We had a little ceremony in the cafeteria to honor and show our respect for all the students and teachers lost to this senseless violence. The administration was nice enough to change our schedule so we could have our 17 minutes for these 17 people at recess, also to reserve the cafe for this ceremony.  Student Council members passed out orange ribbons to everyone that came down and also we asked everyone to wear their gray Highlands t-shirts to represent the high schools color. We started off the ceremony with a minute of silence, then with a thank you to the administration for allowing us to have the chance to participate in the National Walkout Day.  After that, fellow Student Council member, Jenna, gave a speech on what happened at the shooting and what this ceremony was all about. After her speech, Emanuel gave a description on the 17 people who died in this shooting, describing who they were, their loves and passions. Just before this ceremony ended, students sang the national anthem and Hawaii Pono’i.  We ended this ceremony by talking about how, in times like these, we really need to come together and support one another as much as possible! Always remember to never take anything or anyone for granted because you never know when your or their last day will be. Also remember to be there for one another when we need it, and to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you...  Skyla, Student Government Vice-President

Escape Room Team Challenge!

The Joker has trapped you and 6 other team mates in the Student Council Room — you are trapped and time is ticking!  What. Do. You. Do?!? The Highlands Escape Room Team Challenge was a blast!!! This was definitely a special activity because it was Highlands' first ever escape room. It was team vs. team, grade vs. grade level challenge Each team got to send their finest to get locked up...and hopefully, escape in time! To get on the team, each Homeroom tested it’s students with logic puzzle. It was timed in order to find the 7 best students on each team. The story went that the Joker captured your team and has you all as his prisoners... Will you escape in time?!? Each team had a time limit of 10 minutes, but the good news is that they had 3 hints. Teams were struggled to get to the next step of finding the key that would set them free from the Joker's nasty imprisonment. Did your team make it out? A few did, most didn't! We would like to thank Dance Committee for making Highlands first-ever Escape Room possible. Let's look forward to the next one, if you dare?!?  Kaydy, Dance Committee Co-Chairperson

Smiles were everywhere as students from different teams challenged each other for tons of spirit points! Fun Friday was the greatest way for students to get out there and have fun and also savagely try to win in competing games.
