The Earth is a beautiful place but humans are destroying our home! 14 billion pounds of garbage are being dumped into the ocean every single year... that's more than 1.5 million pounds per hour!!! So, on Earth Day 2019, the Highlands Student Council set off to Nimitz Beach to host a beach cleanup. We invited students, teachers and staff from several other clubs on campus in order to get a larger work force for this herculean task! Once everyone arrived, the beach was blazing hot! We first got organized and then we started the clean up. Everyone got their trash bags and gloves to pick up trash along the beach and we fanned out across Kalaeloa Beach park in every direction. After an hour and half of cleaning the beach, we picked up at least, 10 bags worth of trash — approximately 100 lbs of trash! The Highlands Student Council was able to complete the goal of cleaning a beach and in the process made Mother Earth a little bit more beautiful ;) After our service project was complete we had a potluck and bonded with one another through several fun games on the now beautiful beach! Next year, we plan to do more service project like this and include even more people! Arisa, Spirit Committee
