Earth Day 2024 Cleanup

The Earth Day 2024 Cleanup at Highlands Intermediate brought together the school community in a concerted effort to nurture the environment and take care of our campus at the same time. Led by the passionate efforts of the Track Team, who tirelessly combed the field to collect every stray piece of trash, the event was a testament to their dedication. Meanwhile, the Drama Club infused creativity by designing eco-friendly posters encouraging sustainable practices, adding flair to the cleanup. The Student Council, embodying the spirit of school pride, crafted a new sign declaring “Colts Pride,” symbolizing their commitment to both environmental stewardship and school spirit. Additionally, the National Junior Honor Society lent a helping hand in various campu cleanup activities, demonstrating their leadership and service to the community. Together, these groups exemplified the power of collective action and camaraderie in fostering a cleaner and more sustainable future for their school and beyond. Interact Club Pu'uloa Cleanup 2023

Pu'uloa Bike Path near Blaisdell Park is such a wonderful place with beautiful views. Members of the community can walk along the path that overlook the view of Pearl Harbor and beyond. Though it is sad to see, over time the path became covered with trash and many invasive, non-native plants. However, thanks to the Rotary Club of Pearlridge, the Highlands Intermediate Interact Club was able to revisit the path and clean up a good portion of it one Saturday morning. When we arrived we were eager and ready to help! We had our gloves and tools at the ready. We split into two groups. One group was worked to clear all the trash on the beach while everyone else was clearing out the invasive species. In the end, we picked up all the trash in the area and cleared out a huge chunk of invasive plants. It was very hot but those four hours of work were worth it knowing we were able to contribute to the path of a cleaner and better environment! Rica, Student Government Vice-President

 

Interact Club Service Project: Pu'uloa Cleanup

Pu’uloa Bike Path is a beautiful place to spend your mornings. You can walk along the path and look at Pearl Harbor, it's also great to bike along. Though it is a sad sight to see, the path is covered in trash and invasive plants. Thanks to The Rotary Club of Pearlridge the Highlands Student Council they were able to clean up a good portion of it. As a result a natural spring was found amongst the weeds and trash! The spring eventually became a small stream that led into Pearl Harbor. It was honestly incredible to be able to know that this natural spring was right there under all the trash and plants. When we got there we were split into groups, some people were shoveling sand and the rest were helping with collecting trash and cutting and collecting the plants. It was a gorgeous day to be out helping the community, even though it got a bit hot it was really worth it. We planned to go back the next quarter and help out more! We hope that one day the path can become a better and cleaner environment for people and animals!

Earth Day Cleanup 2016

Friday, April 22, was Earth Day! In recognition of Earth Day, we had a dress down where everyone at our school could wear green to earn spirit points! Another thing that the Highlands Intermediate Student Council did for Earth Day was another awesome Service Project! The Pearl City District Park gym, courts and fields next to our school was littered with trash and looked like it needed a little TLC ;) It was our little way of saying thank you to the people who run and manage the PC District Park for letting us use their facilities for PE classes, for recess and lunch free play, and all of our intramurals, dances and assemblies — we would clean the park for them! We all had fun cleaning because we brought music with us and most importantly, a good attitude! Lastly, to end Earth Day Cleanup 2016, our HIS Student Council decided to start a new tradition by planting our own trees for Earth Day!  Each Student Council member got a chance to dig with pick and shovel and we finally got 3 trees planted next to the SG Room! This Earth Day has taught all of us to enjoy and appreciate everything that we have, and to ALWAYS treat our Earth with respect! Sarah, 8th Grade Secretary
