It’s the new year and that means it’s time for PCHES Reading Buddies! This annual program has the Highlands Student Council walking over to our neighbor school, Pearl City Highlands Elementary (PCHES for short) to promote literacy with all 2nd Graders. Not only do we read to them, we also play with them! PCHES Reading Buddies is a great way to take on a new leadership role for us and while having fun at the same time! Inevitably we build bonds and make sure everyone is included and also having the best time ;) For us 8th Graders this program provides an amazing opportunity to practice our leadership skills, teach us how to become better presenters, and helps us become better facilitators while running icebreakers and energizers. PCHES Reading Buddies is a win-win situation for all of us as we make lifelong memories and bonds with our little buddies ;) Jilliane Gaborno, Assembly Committee

PCHES Reading Buddies 2019
From happy endings, creative plots to valuable lessons, all are found in childhood books. The Highlands Intermediate Student Council brought back old stories that were once part of our past for others to enjoy. We read our favorite stories to the 2nd graders of the Pearl City Highlands Elementary School over the span of the Q3 and Q4. We also loved facilitating fun activities like icebreakers to start off each session and whole group energizers to end it. Our absolute favorite part was seeing the excitement in our little buddies’ faces every time we came in the door and then as we said our goodbyes until next time… Diogne, Student Government Secretary

PCHES Reading Buddies
"Oh my gosh! I can't wait to go back!" was about the only thing you could hear from Student Council this past Wednesday since we got to become reading buddies to kindergarteners! Throughout Q4, the Highlands Student Council will be walking to Pearl City Highlands Elementary School (PCHES) every Wednesday during the last period of the day. Every Student Council member is buddied up with 3-4 adorable kindergarteners! Within our short, but productive 30 minutes we read a book and filled in the rest of the time with icebreakers and fun energizers! For the most part, the kindergarteners put their squirmy hands in their lap and remain very engaged in the entire time. Furthermore, Student Council gets to practice becoming a Community Contributor (GLO #2) as well as becoming an Effective Communicator (GLO #5). What an awesome way to kick off the 4th quarter and have a positive influence on the next generation! :)) Peyten, Student Government Treasurer
