It’s the new year and that means it’s time for PCHES Reading Buddies! This annual program has the Highlands Student Council walking over to our neighbor school, Pearl City Highlands Elementary (PCHES for short) to promote literacy with all 2nd Graders. Not only do we read to them, we also play with them! PCHES Reading Buddies is a great way to take on a new leadership role for us and while having fun at the same time! Inevitably we build bonds and make sure everyone is included and also having the best time ;) For us 8th Graders this program provides an amazing opportunity to practice our leadership skills, teach us how to become better presenters, and helps us become better facilitators while running icebreakers and energizers. PCHES Reading Buddies is a win-win situation for all of us as we make lifelong memories and bonds with our little buddies ;) Jilliane Gaborno, Assembly Committee

PCHES Reading Buddies 2023
It’s been 4 long years but we’re baaaaaaaack… The Highlands Intermediate Student Council made plans to visit Pearl City Highlands Elementary 2nd Graders every Friday to read books and play energizers and icebreaker activities. They had so much fun with their little buddies each and every week! After seven weeks they topped it off with one final celebration ;) There were so many gifts, hugs and lifelong memories exchanged that we can’t wait until the next Reading Buddies!!! PCHES Reading Buddies "Aloha O'e"
Its sad to say, everything fun and memorable always come to an end. On the last day of our PCHES Reading Buddies program, the kindergarteners and the Highlands Student Council will never forget the adventure we went through. Each class was filled with laughter as they played games, decorate thank you booklets for their teachers, and eating fun treats! We can all conclude, being a teacher is very difficult! Having to read to kindergarteners with a short attention span can be very challenging! Bu, in the end, it was all so much fun! Our culminating activity took place outside with all 4 PCHES kindergarten classes. It was like graduation filled with floaties, leis, and lots of hugs and smiles all around. We wanted to end on a high note so we had all 4 K classes do the #RunningManChallenge!! It was a beautiful day filled with the most beautiful, unforgettable memories....Jayden, 8th Grade President

PCHES Reading Buddies
Every Wednesday during Quarter 4, during study skills, Highlands Intermediate StuCo walked to Pearl City Highlands Elementary School to where each person read to 3 or 4 energetic kindergartens! We read books to the kids and did fun icebreakers and energizers! It was so much fun to read to the children to let them develop a love of reading. As quoted from Dr. Seuss, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go.” Jade, StuCo Historian
