New Year = New Teachers, New Students, New Teams!

Whoop, whoop, hooray! School is finally getting back to in-person learning, and Highlands Intermediate is so excited! It’s a new year, a new start! And with this new, exciting 2021-2022 school year coming in, we have brand-new teachers, students, and teams! Last year, our school theme was video games, fitting with COVID, but now, it’s the ever so funny Pixar! Like a phoenix rising from the fire, Highlands Intermediate has emerged from the darkness, bigger and better and raring to go! Our teams have picked their new Pixar identities, this year’s Student Council officers have been elected, our teachers have prepared for class, and us students are waiting anxiously with our bags packed for every new day! Plus, a little birdie told me that Student Council is just itching to plan some incredible activities for everyone! Colts, an awesome year has just started, what will you do with it? Gung Hee Fat Choy, Highlands!

“Gung Hee Fat Choy!” Happy Chinese New Year everyone! This year’s celebration was a sweet surprise to everyone, event to Mr. White lol ;)  When the Hawai’i Lion Dance Association showed up no one was ready for what was to come. But, both students and teachers quickly gathered around to get up close and personal with the amazing show that they put on! Amazing footwork and rhythmic drums made for such an awesome show! Students that need that extra bit of luck made sure to feed the dragon money as is Chinese tradition.  We were so pumped up after this Lion Dance performance we simply can’t wait for next year ;) Jasmine, Spirit Committee

Chinese New Year Lion Dance Performance

The Highlands Intermediate Lion Dance Club was back in action after a 2 year hiatus -- and the wait was totally worth it!  The Year of the Goat was introduced with a BANG -- literally -- as our very own HIS Lion Dance Club shaked and shimmied all over campus starting in the Front Office and ending up in the PE Courtyard for the big finale!  The frenzied lion was hungry for money as it gobbled up dollars the students, teachers and staff members "fed it" for good luck.  The grand finale was quite a spectacle as the administrators and staff members held out their long bamboo poles with lisee (Chinese red paper envelopes for good luck) dangling from the ends.  The Lion always wins and gets all the lisee in the end -- as it should.  Gung Hee Fat Choy Highlands!!!
