Service Field Trip - Malama Pu’uloa 2022

Hawaii is a beautiful place and we want to keep it that way! With invasive species of plants taking over the beautiful native plants of island every single year, it is up to us to protect our home! So, on May 14th, 2022, Malama Pu'uloa, the Highlands Student Council, Aloha Aina, and Aquaponics set off to Kapapapuhi Point Park with the help of some Marines to do cleanup and species clearing. We had over 100 people volunteering and helping clean! Once everyone arrived, we chanted E Hō Mai to ask for wisdom, then we got organized and started the clean-up. With gloves pulled on and our tools in hand, everyone fanned out across the park in every direction to clear the invasive plants along the path. After about 4 hours we made a huge pile of tree branches and mangroves! The Highlands Student Council, Aloha Aina, and aquaponics were able to complete the goal of clearing invasive plants and in the process made Hawai’i a little bit more beautiful :) After our service project was complete we had a little pizza party and bonded with one another through talking and just hanging out! Next year, we plan to do more service projects like this and include even more people! Duke, Promotions Committee Chair

StuCo Bonding: Scare School! at Haunted Plantation

The way we started planning for this year’s year’s Highlands Haunted House 7 was by participating in Mr. White’s “Scare School!” a full month before the haunt.  Mr. White gave us the Highlands Haunt Employee Handbook that went over the game plan for this year’s haunt and also how to scare people in a haunt. He really emphasized professionalism and we will be actual employees working shifts ;) Afterward, we had the pleasure to visit Hawaii’s most scariest and successful haunt of them all -- Haunted Plantation -- and met up with owners Noah and Angelina. They took us through the historic plantation village, showing us each house that had real paranormal activity that affected them and their workers throughout the years! The scariest story had to be that one of their actors were choked in house where a ghostly lady shows herself through the front window -- only thing is she didn’t have a face!!! The tour ended when Noa and Angelina showed us some of the Hollywood style masks that they had made themselves. They explained the process on how to make the masks and even let some of us try them on!  Brittany, Assembly Committee

StuCo Bonding: Hawaii Escape Challenge!

Ready...Set...Escape! Have you ever been stuck in a situation and had to work with other people to fix it?  Well on Saturday, September 9th the HIghlands Student Council experienced the Hawaii Escape Challenge at Pearlridge Uptown for themselves!!  Everyone had to work together to find out how to get out of their rooms within the time limit of 1 hour!  We got to choose from 3 different escape rooms: The Diamond Heist, The Virus, and the Nuclear Launch! There were 3 separate rooms we needed to figure out how to get into and out of.  Each room was filled with dozens of different puzzles we needed to solve in order to find other clues, riddles and even secret passageways and rooms!  Even though we didn’t make it out in time -- we were only a puzzle and a half away from making it out successfully -- we still had an amazing time and it was an awesome team bonding experience!!  We learned how to work together in stressful times, and under time limits, how everyone reacts to harrowing situations, who takes more of the leadership role when we have a time limit to work on something, and that communication is the most important part of a team…  Would you ever like to try an escape room with your friends and family?  Do you think you’d be able to make it out in time?!? StuCo Nightmare's Live! Behind-the-Scenes Fieldtrip

It’s October, and that means Halloween is right around the corner! To help gain ideas for this year's Haunted House, the Highlands Student Council and friends headed down to Flora Dec and Hawaii’s scariest haunt, Nightmares Live!  On the bus ride down, Mr.White told so many true ghost stories about Highlands Intermediate, the old Metal Shop and our very own StuCo Room -- what a fun and scary ride it was!  When we finally arrived, we were greeted by Mr. Kevin Okada, owner and producer of Nightmare’s Live!, some of his actors and builders. We asked many questions on how to run a successful Haunted House and we got to demo a lot of their costumes and gadgetry. After we were done with our “research,” we got to finally experience their haunted house several times -- itt was so scary, but oh, so fun!!! Get ready, Highlands, we’re pumped up for Highlands Haunted House 5: “The Thing That Should Not Be!”  Taylor, SG V.P.
