Love 4 Lahaina Fundraiser

Hey everyone!  Guess what? When Highlands Intermediate students had heard of the devastating fires that happened in Maui, they knew immediately that they needed to do something to help out their community and fellow students. When putting themselves in the shoes of the students on Maui, all of the students rallied together to bring hope and support to those affected. The Service and Spirit committee organized a heartwarming fundraising event(penny race) in mid August, called “Love 4 Lahaina” with the goal of not only raising funds, but also encouraging a sense of unity and healing. The event, held on school grounds, was a demonstration of the compassion and generosity of the students and faculty. Despite the challenges posed by the recent fires, the Love 4 Lahaina fundraiser managed to surpass expectations, raising just over $2000. The funds went towards supporting the affected students and schools on Maui, aiding in the rebuilding process and providing essential resources to the Lahaina community. The success of “Love 4 Lahaina” not only lies in the financial contributions but also in the uplifting spirit it brought to the entire school. The Service and Spirit Committee’s dedication and the enthusiastic participation of the school community showcased the power of collective action and resilience of the students and faculty. As the event concluded, the echoes of laughter, excitement and positive energy lingered in the air. Service Fieldtrip: Hui Alaloa 2022

Hui: a group of people united in purpose, Alaloa: a sacred, sometimes spiritual path...Our Hui Alaloa Project brings together Hawaiian cultural practitioners, artists, schools, and residents visions for holistic greenspace. Visions for this demonstration project include community engaged art pieces, plantings that include native, medicinal and food species along a well traveled path along the Pu`uloa shoreline. As a community networking non-profit, Hui o Ho`ohonua is committed to supporting the community vision for this place with the help of a network of urban forestry professionals. Service Field Trip - Malama Pu’uloa 2022

Hawaii is a beautiful place and we want to keep it that way! With invasive species of plants taking over the beautiful native plants of island every single year, it is up to us to protect our home! So, on May 14th, 2022, Malama Pu'uloa, the Highlands Student Council, Aloha Aina, and Aquaponics set off to Kapapapuhi Point Park with the help of some Marines to do cleanup and species clearing. We had over 100 people volunteering and helping clean! Once everyone arrived, we chanted E Hō Mai to ask for wisdom, then we got organized and started the clean-up. With gloves pulled on and our tools in hand, everyone fanned out across the park in every direction to clear the invasive plants along the path. After about 4 hours we made a huge pile of tree branches and mangroves! The Highlands Student Council, Aloha Aina, and aquaponics were able to complete the goal of clearing invasive plants and in the process made Hawai’i a little bit more beautiful :) After our service project was complete we had a little pizza party and bonded with one another through talking and just hanging out! Next year, we plan to do more service projects like this and include even more people! Duke, Promotions Committee Chair

Welcome Highlands Intermediate Interact Club!

Pull out your cameras and get ready to cheer…please welcome, the Highlands Intermediate Interact Club! Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Pearlridge, we finally have our very own Interact Club! The Rotary Club of Hawaii has helped create awesome Interact Clubs all across the island for one purpose: to better our community! The Interact Club strives to support the heartwarming society of our islands through service projects, fundraisers, and all around fun activities that make everyone feel welcome! And on April ___, the president of the Rotary Club and a representative made their way down to our school to present us with our official certificate of organization, and kick start our first project with them! I assure you, these thank you posters to the healthcare workers of Pali Momi are just the beginning to a year of great service projects and contributions to our community! We Couldn't Have Done It Without You! First Baptist Church of Pearl City

Student Activities involves so many constituents: students, teachers, staff, administration, parents. There is one group that doesn't get as much attention but still they remain so important to everything we try to accomplish each and every year - make Highlands Intermediate the best school ever through amazing activities! Here is a video of our awesome Pearl City community assisting in our annual A Hui Hou Activities. Traditionally, in the past, the First Baptist Church of Pearl City helps to setup the events for the last day of school: Farewell Assembly, Highlands Ho'olaule'a, 8th Grade Walk and then the Farewell Dance all at the Pearl City Gym. This year, because of COVID restrictions we had to pare it down and host the 8th Grade Walk and 8th Grade Farewell at the PE Courtyard. It turned out amazingly and those students, the Class of 2025 got get sent out of Highlands in style! It was a memorable day indeed for everyone that participated and all we have to say is that Highlands loves our neighbors across the street, the First Baptist Church of Pearl City!!!

Christmas Spirit Week 2020: Christmas Cards 4 the Front Line

Healthcare workers have been facing the pandemic since the beginning of this worldwide crisis. The 7th Grade Council provided all HIS students with the opportunity to thank and encourage those workers just in time for the holidays! Students were encouraged to buy or make a homemade Christmas card for the hospital’s frontline team members and they could earn spirit points for their teams. All cards were delivered to our partner hospital, Kuakini Medical Center and distributed to as many healthcare providers right before Christmas! The cards put a grin on the all the health workers faces and some cards were even hung up in the hospital's bulletin board for all the see! Thanksgiving 2020: Favors 4 Furry Friends

Happy Thanksgiving, Turkeys!  Did you hear about all the great Thanksgiving activities from Friday, November 20 to Wednesday, November 26?  I hope you participated in the 8th Grade Council's “Favors 4 Furry Friends” activity.  The 8th Grade Council worked really hard to put together a toy drive for all the dogs and cats at the Hawaiian Humane Society.  You can even make cute little dog or cat bandanas as well ;). What a great way to be kind and thoughtful to our furry friends, especially those that have been given way, lost or forgotten during the Thanksgiving season. When you do something for the community, doesn’t it feel good knowing that you helped somebody/something, especially during this pandemic?  After all the donations were collected, counted and sorted,the 8th Grade Council went to Hawaiian Humane Society on Wednesday December 8th to drop off the donations and they met a nice lady named Annie Mukai.  Ms. Mukai met up with and greeted the 8th Grade Council at the Hawai'i Humane Societyand graciously accepted the donations.  We hope to see everyone soon and stay safe!!!  Delicia, 8th Grade Secretary

Thanksgiving 2020: Virtual Food Drive

Mahalo Nui, Colts Nation! Now more than ever, many Hawaii families struggle financially to put food on their family's table. You heard the call and joined us in the fight against hunger in Hawai'i via our annual HIS Food Drive! Over the course of 3 weeks we collected online donations to donate to the Hawaii Foodbank so they can continue to help families in need. Our combined efforts netted $1,690.55 for those in need just in time for the upcoming holiday season ;) As always, thank you for your help Colts - you did an amazing thing!

“Make-A-Difference” 4 COVID-19

The 2019 - 2020 school year sure took a sudden and unexpected turn for the worst! Yet, even if we were separated, it didn’t stop us from making things just a little more positive ;) This year, our “Make-A-Difference” project was COVID-19 based. Each member of the student council worked on their own individual projects to spread a positive message, help out, or just make things easier on others. Some wrote cards to healthcare workers, sewed face masks, or made websites. All in the effort to make a difference during the pandemic. After our projects were complete, they were shared on the HIS social media to help heal or spread the good vibes. This goes to show that there is no limit on how positive messages can be spread. Kindness Week 2018

This year’s Kindness Week made the entire school so warm, that maybe the Grinch’s heart might’ve been thawed! This was evidenced by all the students lining up with their Kindness Cards on the last day, ready to get their reward for getting closer to Santa’s Nice List. Even after we had closed off the lines for ice cream sundaes, that didn’t stop everyone from giving in a card to show that you don’t need a reward to be kind to people. This year’s Kindness Week 2019 was a total success because there were students from every team who went out of their way to spread kindness and good vibes across campus!
