Spirit Competition Kick Off 2021! Video

The Highlands Spirit Competition 21-22 kicked off with the teachers over the course of 1 week battled for the top spot on our Nintendo Switch! For the game, Mr. White chose the super fun racing game based on the Pixar movie: Cars 3! 2 teachers from each team raced the Copper Canyon Speedway track and tried their very best to get the fastest to the checkered flag! The competition was furious as the teachers tried to tap into their inner child for video game skill and strategy! Each teacher played once, and the average team time was taken to determine the winners of the games!

Ironically, Team A (Laule'a) - Cars took first place! Congrats to Mr. Esteban and Mr. Zhang for being our Teacher Champions and bringing eternal glory to your team this year!!!

Spirit Competition Kick-Off 2021! Cars3

It’s time to kick-start the Highlands Intermediate 2021 Spirit Competition! And what better way to start than with our very own awesome teachers? From August 10 to August 13, a Cars 3 competition for the teachers was run in the Student Council Room and boy was it awesome! Teachers from all across campus gathered in the spirit filled StuCo room and fought for glory on the switches. After being without many activities for over a year, everyone jumped at the chance to finally get back into the game! Plus, whoever won would get a head start in our school’s spirit competition, and we all know how competitive the teams can get! At the end of the year, winners receive the sought after spirit cup and the chance to choose their identities first. So with gaming reputation and spirit points on the line, teachers, ready? Steady? GO! Mia, Student Government Vice President

Spirit Competition 20-21 Kick Off! "Level Up!" Teacher Challenge

We’re gonna throw it back to the beginning of the school year and the kick-off event for the Highlands Spirit Competition 20-21! Our theme this year is "Level Up!", a video game theme that seemed so appropriate with the distance learning/virtual school reality we are all stuck with... Since the teachers were already on campus, we decided to kick-off our annual competition with them! Over the course of 1 week, 2 teachers from each team took over the Student Council Room and battled it out via our resident Nintendo Switch! Mr. White hand-selected 8 classics from the original NES (Nintendo Entertainment System): Super Marios Bros, Donkey Kong, Excitebike, Super Punchout!, Ghosts n Goblins, Donkey Kong Jr., Dr. Mario and the one that started it all… the original Mario Bros.! The teams of teachers played the Nintendo Classics and tried their very best to get the highest scores possible within the given timeframe for each of the games. The competition was furious and frenetic as the teachers tried to tap into their child for video game skill and strategy! After 7 rounds of play, it was Team C - Koa Kau Lio (Ms. Smitha and Mr. Zhang) that prevailed and took 1st Place!!! Check out the link in the bio above to see all the action... Let's look forward to many more opportunities to "Level Up!" in the 2nd semester - bring it!!!

Highlands Spirit Competition Winner 2020 - Team Hui Mana'o!!!

The Highlands Intermediate Spirit Competition started way back in August of 2019 with several games at the Welcome Back Assembly. Then, each team earned tons of points based on their performances at Spirit Week 2019, all the intramurals, door contests, all the dances, all the Halloween activities, all the costume contests, Highlands Hunger Games 7: “This Ain’t No Fairytale!”, and on and on... The team that won accumulated 3,439 spirit points over tons of activities all year long! They did not relent, they stayed together as a team the whole year and competed in every event with maximum skill and enthusiasm. And that team is none other than... Team Hui Mana’o!!!! Big props to Team Hui Mana’o for taking the Highlands Spirit Cup back to your team! You took over 1st place on the very last activity of the school year: Q3 Intramural Soccer when you won the Championship!  As a result, Team Hui Mana’o edged Team Laulima by just 26 spirit points - wow!!!  So close!  Congratulations once again to Team Hui Mana’o - Highlands Intermediate Spirit Competition Winners!!! You’ll be able to choose first in the upcoming Team Character Draft for the upcoming 2020 - 2021 sy! We have to ask you - what team will it be next year?!? What team will win the Highlands Intermediate Spirit Cup 2020 - 2021? What team will harness eternal glory and bask in it’s goodness? We can’t wait to find out…

Highlands Lunch Count Competition 2018

Lunch and spirit points are my 2 favorite things -- so, this year’s Lunch Count Spirit Competition will surely be a great event! The rationale behind this event is that we want as many students to eat at our cafeteria during the next 4 weeks so we’ll get more lunch choices and more cafeteria workers the rest of the year.  I worked a recess shift and it truly was, a long line of seventh and eighth graders waiting in line to get one of Highlands’ school lunches slowly inching forward and proudly holding up their team lanyards just to tell me, “I’m here for my spirit points!”. As more and more people had come through and the tallies built up I had realized something that had made me even more proud of my team, the team that had the most people show up during recess was team Ho’oko, my team! In the end, I really hope that after this amazing activity my team ends up getting the most spirit points! Jasmine, Spirit Committee Chairperson

Welcome Back Assembly 2018 "Welcome to Olympus!"

Welcome Back, Heroes!!!!!! The Welcome Back Assembly 2018 “Welcome to Olympus!” was thrilling and amazing! To get it started right, the Student Council stood in the doorways of the gym shouting cheers to all the student to pump them up for the biggest assembly of the year! To kickoff the assembly we had Thalia sing the “Star Spangled Banner” and Menine sung “Hawaii Pono’i.” After hearing their wonderful singing, Mr. Rabacal played ukulele and sang “This Is Me” from the movie, The Greatest Showman -- it was soooooo awesome! Next, the Highlands Student Council got introduced to the school with a dance to Bruno Mars’ “Gibberish.” After that, it was the new teachers’ turn!  After being introduced, they surprised everyone with the “Cupid Shuffle.” Taking it up several notches *hahahah*, dancers from Treasure Box Studios took to the floor with an amazing dance routine!!! The rest of the assembly was dedicated to kicking off the Highlands Spirit Competition through several games played between the 7 Highlands Teams: Poseidon’s Relay Race, Hermes Cup Challenge, Sword Balance, Sword Flip, Sword Tag, Sword Thief, and Chariot Race!  It was great to see both students and teachers participating with such spirit and skill… we just knew it was just the beginning of some amazing things to come! Brittany, Assembly Co-Chairperson
