Spirit Point Tally 20-21 New Year Update!

Happy New Year, Colts! We want to thank you for participating in our Christmas Spirit Week 2020 - 5 days of holiday dress ups, 5 days of festive activities! If you participated, you earned your team a ton of precious spirit points! Because of all the Christmas activities, there is a new Spirit Point leader.... Team 4 - Alaka'i (Pokémon) has moved into 1st Place!!! As a result, several teams made moves up and down as well. Let's look forward to more awesome opportunities to earn spirit points in the near future - an announcement will be coming soon for more spirit point opportunities ;) Way to show your school spirit, Colts!

Christmas Spirit Week 2020: Christmas Bingo

Do you like a little chaos in your Christmas, eh?! If so, our Christmas Spirit Week 2020: Christmas Bingo would have been the holiday event just for you! For the entire week, students and teachers were at free reign to complete very fun pre-set activities that were provided to them via the Christmas Bingo Sheet. The sheet was well thought out and provided to everyone via email by our school’s very own wonderful Student Government. Some of the requirements were as whacky as dressing up as your favorite christmas character, decorate a gingerbread house, go Christmas shopping, place a topper on your tree, and decorate your tree. Upon completion of a row of the bingo sheet, students were to get parent signatures and at the end of the week, everyone was to turn in their sheets to earn spirit points for their team. Christmas Spirit Week 2020: Homemade Holiday

Did you really think that Christmas is CANCELLED?! COVID-19, quarantines, nor pandemics couldn’t stop this heart-warming activity from going on!  On the 17th of December 2020 the Assembly Committee counted all the submissions for their activity for Christmas Spirit Week 2020: Homemade Holiday. What is a Homemade Holiday you may ask? Well, Homemade Holiday is an activity that asks you to create a homemade object of your choice, but it must be Christmas or holiday related, such as ornaments, yummy desserts, Christmas cards, and maybe even a gift. We were so excited to have this activity and to share it with all of you. Hopefully, you all had as much fun making these as we did  putting it all together! Christmas Spirit Week 2020: Christmas Escape Room!

Do you have what it takes to save Christmas?!?  Well, these eager sleuths sure did!  If you don’t know, an Escape Room is a game in which a team of players cooperatively discover clues, solve puzzles, and accomplish tasks in one or more rooms in order to progress and accomplish a specific goal in a limited amount of time.  In this case, our escape room was virtual and Christmas themed.  In the end, these three teams survived and did indeed save Christmas - yay!!!  Victoria, Spirit Committee

Christmas Spirit Week 2020: Christmas Cards 4 the Front Line

Healthcare workers have been facing the pandemic since the beginning of this worldwide crisis. The 7th Grade Council provided all HIS students with the opportunity to thank and encourage those workers just in time for the holidays! Students were encouraged to buy or make a homemade Christmas card for the hospital’s frontline team members and they could earn spirit points for their teams. All cards were delivered to our partner hospital, Kuakini Medical Center and distributed to as many healthcare providers right before Christmas! The cards put a grin on the all the health workers faces and some cards were even hung up in the hospital's bulletin board for all the see! Colts, we want to thank you for putting in the extra effort to make the Kuakini Medical Center workers happy and spirited for this special holiday season! Isabella, 7th Grade Council Member

Christmas Spirit Week 2020: Christmas Carol Kahoot!

“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas..” so you know what that means, right?!? Holiday fun and memories! On December 14, 2020, 8th Grade Council kicked off our Christmas Spirit Week 2020 with all the Christmas songs you know and love while playing, “Christmas Carol” Kahoot! Students and teachers from each team challenged each other, and in the process won their team a ton of spirit points and a Jamba Juice gift cards. Throughout the game, everyone heard Ariana Grande, Michael Bublé, to even the classic crooners like Bing Crosby, and many more! Not only that, but the leaderboard was going absolutely haywire! But, in the end, it was Jordan from Team B - Hui Mana’o that walked away with 1st Place and won his team 100 spirit points! Not only that, but Mrs. Morihara from Hui Mana’o took 2nd Place an extra 75 spirit points! And at close 3rd Place, we had Ms. Onishi from Team A - Laule’a winning 50 spirit points! Big thanks to everyone who signed up to join the fun and we hope you continue to participate in the rest of our Christmas Spirit Week 2020 and the many fun, holiday activities and dress ups! Thanksgiving 2020: Favors 4 Furry Friends

Happy Thanksgiving, Turkeys!  Did you hear about all the great Thanksgiving activities from Friday, November 20 to Wednesday, November 26?  I hope you participated in the 8th Grade Council's “Favors 4 Furry Friends” activity.  The 8th Grade Council worked really hard to put together a toy drive for all the dogs and cats at the Hawaiian Humane Society.  You can even make cute little dog or cat bandanas as well ;). What a great way to be kind and thoughtful to our furry friends, especially those that have been given way, lost or forgotten during the Thanksgiving season. When you do something for the community, doesn’t it feel good knowing that you helped somebody/something, especially during this pandemic?  After all the donations were collected, counted and sorted,the 8th Grade Council went to Hawaiian Humane Society on Wednesday December 8th to drop off the donations and they met a nice lady named Annie Mukai.  Ms. Mukai met up with and greeted the 8th Grade Council at the Hawai'i Humane Societyand graciously accepted the donations.  We hope to see everyone soon and stay safe!!!  Delicia, 8th Grade Secretary

Thanksgiving 2020: Virtual Food Drive

Mahalo Nui, Colts Nation! Now more than ever, many Hawaii families struggle financially to put food on their family's table. You heard the call and joined us in the fight against hunger in Hawai'i via our annual HIS Food Drive! Over the course of 3 weeks we collected online donations to donate to the Hawaii Foodbank so they can continue to help families in need. Our combined efforts netted $1,690.55 for those in need just in time for the upcoming holiday season ;) As always, thank you for your help Colts - you did an amazing thing!

Thanksgiving 2020: Haywire Holidays!

Do you like word scrambles? On Tuesday, November 24th, after school Assembly Committee hosted Haywire Holiday. Haywire Holiday is an event where, in teams of two, each team has to guess what the original form of the scrambled word we present is. The words were Thanksgiving-themed, and all participants were great at unscrambling the words. It was a friendly competition and challenged their minds. Thanksgiving 2020: Fall Facade

This Thanksgiving, students used their creative minds to bring some fun to the virtual classroom! Students were tasked to make a virtual background, displaying a positive message. These backgrounds were great, showing off the school and Thanksgiving theme whilst also adding what people are thankful for! In total, we got 26 entries. Alaka’i took the most spirit points for this activity, racking up an outstanding 60 points for their team! This activity really helped brighten up our classes and shine some light on virtual learning! It was great to see people’s art and creative minds. Thanksgiving 2020: The Thankful List

“Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough.” – Oprah Winfrey.  Did you participate in the Thankful List activity for Thanksgiving 2020? If you didn’t, here’s what you missed! The Thankful List was done as a Thanksgiving-themed activity made by your wonderful Spirit Committee! It was a short form that essentially asked questions about who and what you're thankful for. It was our hope that all students, teachers, and staff members would reflect upon what’s most important to us in our daily lives and be grateful for what we have in light of the upcoming holiday season.  Were you thankful and grateful, Colts?  Then, we our job is done ;)  Happy Holidays!!!  Mary & Victoria, Spirit Committee

Halloween Costume Contest 2020

On October 30, 2020, the day before Halloween, the Spirit Committee hosted a Halloween Costume Contest for all those who signed up with their Team Leaders. For the first time ever, we did it virtually via Google Meet.  Each participant dressed up and entered the contest based on 1 of 3 categories: Creative, Video Games (our school theme this year), And Most Spookiest. We were amazed because everyone’s costume was SPECTACULAR!  All of them were amazing! In the end, Mr. White judged and then announced the winners for the Halloween Costume Contest 2020. Halloween Art Contest 2020

Even though COVID-19 has prevented us from celebrating holidays like Halloween in person, that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate it virtually! At Highlands Intermediate, we absolutely love to celebrate holidays ;) One way to have fun is for students to express their Halloween spirit by drawing! Students were told to submit their own original Halloween drawings by Friday, October 30th if they wanted to earn spirit points for their teams, win prizes and help share their creative sides. All together, this Halloween Art Contest 2020 was a great way for students to get involved and to show some Halloween spirit!
